The History of the Labrador

The island from where its name comes from, in spite of not being native of that place, has a history as agitated as the waves breaking on its shores.

Indeed, the Labrador Island, which is three times the size of Terra Nova, has changed ownership several times: if in 1763 the island belonged to the United Kingdom, The neighboring country, Canada claimed in loud voice its territorial possession.

It took many decades until, in 1909, Newfoundland tried to sell the Labrador Island to the Canadians to the prize of 9 million dollars. This offer was repeated twenty three years later, but this time the value was 12 times higher. Finally on the 1st April 1949, The Labrador Island, as well as Newfoundland, became the tenth province of the Canadian Federation.

The Labrador, whose popularity is relatively recent, has celebrated on 2003 a century of its official recognition. A century of selection and passion have given rise to millions of emulators all along the five continents.

A hundred years of breeding, evolution and selection have permitted the making of the most solicited dog breeding in the world nowadays. This is a hunting dog who has dethroned an uncountable number of stars such as the German Sheppard or the miniature poodle. What’s more surprising that this is given in a dog-breeding environment where the most popular breeds announce a fall, in greater or lesser degree, in terms of births, while the Labrador continues its progress as if nothing could stop it.
